Coping with online learning: Dos, don’ts and beyond of virtual education- Edexlive

Online education and online courses are fast-growing and increasingly becoming a part of higher education and the professional world, making it an accessible alternative to all students. While it is accessible to a large number of people, we also need to accept the fact that its success really depends on how one takes to it.

It is imperative to note that any growing system will have its own set of boundaries, which can sometimes also be construed as limitations or challenges. The consumers are better served if they are aware of such conditions and prepare themselves adequately to internalise their success to their own advantage.

The first step in this regard is to come to terms with the system of online education by knowing what it holds for the users, who are the young students. If you are unprepared to face the reality, then it is clear that you will come out as under-prepared through the online medium, even though you might have registered with the best of institutions and courses.

As a career counsellor, I find that students, particularly the youngsters who pass out from college, appear perturbed with the pressure of online education. Peer pressure and familial push are a few areas that really drive the students much beyond their capacity at times, and this is very evident in their behaviour while attending online education. Sometimes, they are disenchanted and just go through the motion out of compulsion rather than with enthusiasm.

Online education is a self-study method and you will have to come to terms with learning in isolation rather than a classroom set-up. This may sound very basic, but yet, this is a fact since the attrition rate is higher in the beginning as the students find themselves lost. Boost yourself with a positive attitude and business style attire while attending online classes. The more casual you are, the less likely it is that your mind will take to active learning.

Some points to remember
– Prepare well: Proper preparation is fundamental to any e-learning experience
– Know your tech: Be aware of basic technological troubleshooting
– Don’t compare: Don’t compare your performance with others and get demotivated
– Through online education you have the opportunity to learn anything and everything
