Mitchell Highway work at Guyong supporting jobs for 95 people | Western Advocate

news, local-news,

Around 95 jobs are being supported during work on major safety improvements along the Mitchell Highway at Guyong and East Guyong. Bathurst MP Paul Toole said motorists will benefit from safer journeys between Bathurst and Orange which involves installing a number of safety treatments on and alongside the road. “Road crash data collected in recent years has identified a 2.5 kilometre section of highway at Guyong and a 2.8 kilometre section of highway at East Guyong for these improvements to be carried out,” Mr Toole said. “The project involves installing flexible safety barriers in the median and on the roadside, as well as rumble strips on the edge and centreline of the Mitchell Highway. ALSO MAKING NEWS: “Flexible safety barriers are highly effective and proven to reduce the risk of head on crashes by up to 95 per cent. “When coupled with other safety treatments including widened shoulders, rumble strips and wide centre lines, road safety is drastically improved, meaning those who set off on a journey can return home safely.” The $7.7 million upgrade at Guyong is part of the NSW Government’s $50 million package to improve safety on a 50 kilometre section of the Mitchell Highway between Bathurst and Orange, under the Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative. The program will support over 200 jobs in the five year period. This project also includes the construction of a westbound overtaking lane which will improve travel efficiency on this busy commuter corridor between Bathurst and Orange. Work is expected to be completed in May 2021, weather permitting. To complete the project as quickly as possible, Transport for NSW will work a 7am to 5pm nine day on, five day off roster.
